Gaston College stays unbeaten in doubleheader sweep in Region 10 openers
Gaston College continued it successful baseball program restart on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Wake Tech at Ting Park in Holly Springs in the Region 10 openers for both teams.
The Rhinos improved to 7-0 on the season with 7-3 and 11-2 victories over the host Eagles.
Gaston College banged out 26 hits in the two games and got solid pitching from starter Zach Zedalis and reliever Christian Baker in the opener and its first complete game of the season in the nightcap from J.D. Everett.
Ahmir Cournier had five hits in the doubleheader with a double and three RBIs, Konni Durschlag had four hits with a double and Pierson Gunnell had three hits, including a double, in the opener. Other hitting standouts were Chandler Riley (three hits total), J.D. Yakubinis (three hits and four RBIs total), Wade Kelly (two hits, including a triple, in the nightcap), Enrique Wood (double and home run in the nightcap) and Peyton Idol (two hits in nightcap).
"We were consistent with contact at the plate all day," Rhinos coach Shohn Doty said. "I thought our pitching also were efficient and effective. Zach Zedalis went six in the opener before Christian Baker did a good job closing it out in the first game and J.D. Everett was really efficient in going the distance in the second game."
Zedalis improved to 3-0 with a six-inning, three-hit, seven-strikeout effort with Baker following up with three-inning of one-hit, five-strikeout relief pitching. And Everett struck out nine in a three-hit seven-inning complete game in the nightcap.
Gaston College scored in the top of the first of each game as the Rhinos scored twice in the opener and once in the nightcap. A four-run fifth broke open the opener with a four-run third erasing a 2-1 Wake Tech lead and breaking open the second game.
"We're excited with today's wins and look forward to the chance to sweep our first conference series tomorrow," Doty said of the finale of the three-game series that will be played on Sunday.
