Gaston College's Gus Hughes named national pitcher of the week

Gaston College history was set again by Gus Hughes on Wednesday when he became the school's first national player of the week in any sport.

Hughes threw the school's first no-hitter in last Saturday's 9-0 victory over Wake Tech shortly after Sims Legion Park grand re-opening ceremonies.

On Wednesday at noon, the National Junior College Athletic Association named Hughes the Division II pitcher of the week.

In its announcement , @NJCAABaseball tweeted the following:

"History: Made‼️
"Gus Hughes threw Gaston's first-ever no-hitter in the inaugural game of their new ballpark, striking out 14 in seven innings. His historical performance earns the latest #NJCAABaseball DII Pitcher of the Week honor, presented by @TicketSmarter."

Hughes, a 2020 Greensboro Grimsley High graduate, has a 4-0 record with 1.85 ERA and 49 strikeouts in seven appearances this season (five starts) for the Rhinos (26-1), who return to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a doubleheader against Spartanburg Methodist as Sims Legion Park.

Hughes' next start is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. when Gaston College hosts Patrick & Henry Community College in the first game of a doubleheader at Sims Legion Park.
