Gaston College baseball No. 2 in one poll, No. 3 in two others
After a 3-1 week on the field, Gaston College's baseball team remains ranked among the top three Division II teams in the country of all three National Junior College Athletic Association Division II polls.
The Rhinos, 36-4 overall and 26-3 in the West Division of Region 10, remained No. 2 in the www.thejbb.net poll, slipped from No. 2 to No. 3 in the PBR JUCO poll and remained No. 3 in the NJCAA poll.
Coach Shohn Doty's team this week hosts Cleveland Community College on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader then visits Catawba Valley Community College for a three-game series that begins with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.
Chandler Riley (.390 average, 6 home runs, 39 RBIs, 31 stolen bases), Konni Durschlag (.389 average, 6 home runs, 38 RBIs, 10 stolen bases), J.D. Yakubinis (.370 average, 4 home runs, 53 RBIs, 13 stolen bases), Ahmir Cournier (.357 average, 2 home runs, 45 RBIs, 15 stolen bases), Wade Kelly (.348 average, 4 home runs, 34 RBIs, 29 stolen bases), Pierson Gunnell (.344 average, 4 home runs, 26 RBIs) and Trenton Snyder (.304 averag, 4 home runs, 21 RBIs) lead a balanced offensive attack.
And Gus Hughes (7-0 record, 1.90 ERA), J.D. Everett (7-0 record, 3.83 ERA), Marlowe Iorio (5-0, 2.73 ERA), Zach Zedalis (5-0 record, 2.73 ERA), Tyler Parks (3-0 record, 7.47 ERA), Christian Baker (3-1, 2 saves, 0.37 ERA), David Sande (3-0 record, 3.29 ERA), Hunter Shew (2-1 record, 3.68 ERA) and Durschlag (1-1, 4 saves, 2.03 ERA) have led the pitching staff.
