Gaston College ranked in all 3 final junior college baseball polls
Gaston College athletics had never been ranked in any National Junior College Athletic Association poll in any sport until this year.
On Monday, the Rhinos' baseball program learned they were ranked No. 12 in the final NJCAA Division II poll of the year. Previously, Gaston College had drawn final rankings of No. 5 in the PBR JUCO poll on May 2 and No. 5 in the www.thejbb.net poll on May 3.
The Rhinos finished 41-9 overall and 30-6 to win the NJCAA Division II West Division regular season title. As a first-year program, Gaston College was ineligible to compete in postseason competition.
The Rhinos drew the first national ranking in school history when the www.jbb.net poll ranked them No. 8 on March 1. Gaston College later climbed to as high as No. 2 for three straight weeks (April 5, 12 and 19) in that poll.
Gaston College drew its first national ranking in the NJCAA poll at No. 10 on March 7 and climbed to as high as No. 3 in that poll for three straight weeks (April 11, 18 and 25).
And the Rhinos drew its first national ranking in the PBR JUCO poll at No. 7 on March 8 and climbed to as high as No. 2 in that poll on April 11.
Additionally, two of Gaston College's 2022 seasonal opponents finished among the final NJCAA rankings.
Caldwell Tech was ranked No. 1 in the Division III poll for the second straight week. Caldwell Tech won the Mid-Atlantic District title last weekend to advance to the NJCAA Division III World Series and were beaten twice by the Rhinos in February; Gaston College opened their 2022 season with an 8-3 win at Caldwell Tech on Feb. 2 and beat them 12-1 in seven innings by the run rule at Gastonia's CaroMont Health Park on Feb. 9.
And Florence-Darlington Tech was ranked No. 17 in the Division I poll after climbing to a season-high No. 14 last week. Florence-Darlington Tech finished as East District runner-up last weekend to finish one win shy of the NJCAA Division I World Series; Gaston College lost 4-3 at Florence-Darlington Tech on April 30 and 10-4 at Sims Legion Park on May 1 in the final week of the Rhinos' season.
