Top moments of 2023-24: No. 6 - Baseball has school-record 26-game winning streak
When Gaston College began official baseball practice drills in the late summer of 2023, coach Shohn Doty preached to his team that they needed to build upon the 2023 team's National Junior College Athletic Association World Series appearance.
Did they ever - and it started nearly from the start of the season.
The biggest indication of that success came in a school-record 26-game winning streak that lasted from Feb. 14 to March 24.
Amazingly, the Rhinos took 13 of the 26 victories by virtue of mercy rule-shortened contests.
They also recorded nine doubleheader sweeps, including six sweeps of Region 10 Division I opponents.
Pitchers Mason Smith, Wagner Morrissette, Evan Vandenbosch and Connor Frail took four pitching victories apiece during the long winning streak with Landon Carr getting credited for two wins and two saves.
"It's a credit to our kids because 26 in a row says a lot," Doty said of the long winning streak that snapped the previous best of 22 straight victories in the school's start-up season of 2022.
