Gaston College closes regular season with "Sophomore Day" victory

Gaston College's baseball team ended its 2025 regular season on Tuesday with an 11-6 win to celebrate the school's annual "Sophomore Day" at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park.

In pregame ceremonies, coach Shohn Doty and his coaching staff honored sophomores Jackson Berini, Brandon Crabtree, Sam Dansky, Conner Frail, Chris Hendrickson, Nick Lundquist, Clayton Sherwood, Alex Tawa, Jackson Toberman, Jake Young and Noah Zimmerman.

"It's kind of microcosm of the whole season," Doty said. "The first three innings we looked like the team that scored a million runs last weekend and then the rest of the way we don't do much. And the bullpen has been really good all year long but we weren't very good today.
"So we've got to clean that up."

Sam Dansky had three hits, including two doubles, Koy Swanson had a home run, triple and two RBIs and Crabtree had a two-run single to lead the offense, which roared out to a 9-0 lead after four innings before the visitors scored at least one run in the last five innings.

Eight pitchers handled the pitching duties for the Rhinos, who improved to 39-13-1 four days before the Region 10 tournament at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, S.C. Gaston College is the No. 2 seed and plays its first game of the six-team double-elimination tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the winner of Friday's No. 3 USC Lancaster-No. 6 USC Salkehatchie game.

"You know, 39-13 says we've done some good things," Doty said. "We just have to work hard the next couple of days and be ready for the tournament."
