Gaston College returns home in hopes of snapping losing streak on Sunday against Denmark Tech
In 10 seasons of playing basketball, Gaston College has had five three-game losing streaks.
That includes the Rhinos' current losing skein of back-to-back-to-back Region 10 road losses at Spartanburg Methodist, Caldwell Tech and Cape Fear Community college.
"You have to have an attitude about the three-game losing streak," Gaston College coach Jamie Rosser said. "You have to think: 'I'm not losing any more games.' And we have to have a better focus."
That'll start on Sunday at 1 p.m. when Gaston College (12-7, 2-4) hosts Denmark Tech in a Region 10 game at Ashbrook High School.
Statistically, two numbers speak to the Rhinos' recent struggles. Gaston College energy, focus and success has endured wild mood swings this season from half to half. For example, in 11 of the team's 19 games, their scoring totals from one half to the next have changed by more 10 or more points.
"We just cannot put two halves together," Rosser said. "For whatever reason. We're going to keep mixing pieces and trying to find out how we can put two halves together."
Additionally, when the offense is running efficiently, it's percentage of assists-to-field goals made is high. In Gaston College's 12 victories, that percentage is 61.1. In the seven losses, that percentage sags to 40.4.
Rosser has frequently said this season that when the team shares the basketball, style of play is pleasing and all five players on the court are involved.
"We always do better when we share the ball," Rosser said.
Through 19 games this season, the Rhinos have had extraordinary offensive balance with four double-figure scorers - Tyree Bracey at 11.1 points per game, Asil Hoyle at 10.8, DaMarco Watson at 10.5 and Jordan Guthrie at 10.1.
