Top moments of 2024-25: No. 4 - Basketball winning streak ties school record
Following Gaston College's hard-fought 89-83 loss to No. 1-ranked Davidson-Davie Community College, the Rhinos would go on a 17-game winning streak that matches the school's 17-game winning streak during the 1969-70 season.
First-year coach Benny Moss' team did so largely because of a resiliency that led to a school-record 16 come-from-behind wins.
Of the 17 straight victories, the Rhinos won 12 times after facing deficits including two by double-digit margins.
"The team showed a great deal of character to bounce back so many times from adverse situations," Moss said.
The game that forged the tie was a contest in which Gaston College never trailed but had to outlast Denmark Tech in a challenging 58-54 home win on Jan. 29, 2025 at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School.
"Our second group played with the sense of urgency I was looking for," Moss said of his team's effort that night. "It raised our intensity and dictated some things to them."
Eight Rhinos notched points in the low-scoring affair led by reserves Ryan Evans (13 points) and E.J. Joyner (10) and starter Jordan Brown (10).
