Gaston College basketball improves to 7-0 for second-fastest start in school history

Gaston College's basketball is off to its second-fastest start in school history after Sunday's 111-57 victory over the Converse developmental team in Weisinger Center in Spartanburg, S.C.

The win improves the Rhinos to 7-0 on the season, which has been bettered only by a 14-0 start by the 1966-67 team that had future coaching legend Leonard Hamilton as one of its starting guards.

"We really played hard throughout the game," Gaston College coach Benny Moss said. "We challenged ourselves to keep competing hard even when we had big leads.
"To be 7-0 is pretty solid company when you're talking about that (1966-67) team."

Sunday's contest snapped an eight-day layoff and all 14 players Gaston College scored or had a rebound.

Ryan Evans (16 points, 6 rebounds), DeAngelo Canty (14 points, 9 rebounds), Kaleb Siler (13 points), Tin Tikvesa (12 points, 6 rebounds), Jozohn Price (11 points), Tony Goodman (9 points, 6 assists), E.J. Joyner (8 points, 4 rebounds) and Spencer Breeden (8 points) led a balanced attack.

Gaston led 55-24 at halftime and cruised to the win by outscoring the host Valkyries 56-33 in the second half.

The Rhinos return to action with a pair of games in the weekend Caldwell Tech Classic; Gaston College meeting Harford Community College on Saturday at 5 p.m. and meeting Pellissippi State Community College on Sunday at 1 p.m.

"I'm happy we'll again get a lot of practice time," Moss said. "We know that'll be two challenging games against Division I teams."
