Gaston College rolls to 60-point victory to improve to 10-0 on the season

For the second time in school history, Gaston College has opened the season with 10 or more consecutive victories after Wednesday's 109-49 win over the Belmont Abbey College Developmental team.

All 14 players who saw action for the Rhinos scored three or more points and four reached double figures as Rhinos head coach Benny Moss frequently subbed in groups of five at a time throughout the contest.

"That's what you want to see in these type of games," Moss said. "You want to make sure you get everybody some repititions and get some guys in the game. Because you never know if there's an injury or something and you want everybody to be ready.
"I did like the fact that every group that went in did a good job of playing the way we wanted to play."

Individual standouts for the Rhinos were sophomore Ryan Evans (16 points, 6 rebounds), sophomore Kaleb Siler (15 points, 11 rebounds), sophomore Spencer Breeden (13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists), freshman Ian Howard (11 points), freshman Tony Goodman (9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), sophomore J.R. Watson (9 points, 3 rebounds), sophomore Kush Carter (6 points, 5 assists), sophomore Jozohn Price (6 points, 3 rebounds) and sophomore DeAngelo Canty (5 points, 9 rebounds).

Gaston College trailed for only 13 seconds in the first two minutes of the game and built a 10-point lead by the 11:19 mark of the first half, a 20-point led by the 10:46 mark and 30-point lead a minute before taking a 53-20 halftime advantage.

The lead continued to increase in the second half and the final 60-point margin was the Rhinos' largest.

Gaston College outrebounded Belmont Abbey 68-31.

With a 10-0 record, only the 1966-67 team's 14-0 start is better in Gaston College history and the Rhinos have three more games remaining before the Christmas break - at Virginia Peninsula on Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Pfeiffer Developmental team next Wednesday at 6 p.m. and at home at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School against Virginia Peninsula on Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.

"They're a very talented team," Moss said of Virginia Peninsula, a NJCAA Division II team with a 7-3 record against a challenging schedule. "Last year, we won (77-66) at home and then at their place we had to come back in the last two minutes to win (79-75). They're very good, play super hard and are well-coached.
"So we know we're in for a battle."
