Gaston College improves to 12-0 with win over Pfeiffer JV team

Gaston College overcame a team-wide flu bug that knocked three players out of action and went on the road to grind out a 104-81 victory over the Pfeiffer University junior varsity team on Wednesday.

The Rhinos led by as many as 23 points in each half in improving their seasonal record to 12-0 - the second-fastest start in school history.

Even with Gaston College missing three players, the Rhinos got their usual balance.

Sophomores Kaleb Siler (24 points, 13 rebounds), E.J. Joyner (20 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists), DeAngelo Canty (14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocked shots), Ryan Evans (13 points, 4 rebounds), Kush Carter (6 points, 5 rebounds) and Spencer Breeden (5 points, 4 assists, 3 steals) and freshman Tony Goodman (5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) led the way on a night in which all 11 players who participated scored three or more points.

"We've got a little flu bug going on which creates some adversity," Gaston College coach Benny Moss said. "We've got to get back and get those guys back. We've got Thursday, Friday and Saturday to get everybody back and at full speed."

Gaston College, which is two wins shy of the school-record 14-0 start by the 1966-67 team, closes out its first semester schedule on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Virginia Peninsula Community College at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School.

"It'll be a great game," said Moss, whose team won 93-68 at Virginia Peninsula last Saturday. "They're a talented team that's very well coached and plays extremely hard.
"We need to be laser-focused on what's ahead of us. We've had a good first semester and we need to finish strong. 'Finish' will be the message the next few days in practice."
