Gaston College opens Region 10 schedule with road victory
Gaston College opened its National Junior College Athletic Association Region 10 opener with an impressive 122-73 road win at Denmark Tech on Wednesday night.
The Rhinos improved to 16-1 overall and 1-0 in the league following their eighth 100-point game of the season.
Gaston College also improved to 3-2 in Region 10 Division I league openers.
"Anytime you play a conference game on the road, it's great to get a win," Rhinos coach Benny Moss said. "In all of my years of coaching, you've got to protect your homecourt and steal a few wins on the road. So it's a great start to conference play to get a win on the road.
"Now we have to get ready for a tough game at Brunswick on Saturday."
The Rhinos roared to a 62-31 halftime lead and closed out with a strong second half for a 49-point victory in which all 14 Gaston College players scored.
Sophomore Kaleb Siler led the way with 24 points and 13 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.
Other standouts were sophomores DeAngelo Canty (19 points, 9 rebounds), Jozohn Price (12 points, 8 rebounds), Ryan Evans (9 points), Spencer Breeden (9 points), Ben Stevens (8 points, 6 rebounds) and E.J. Joyner (5 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists) and freshman Tin Tikvesa (11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists).
"Kaleb was really good," Moss said. "He imposed his will inside. And E.J. helped us to be able to push tempo and we also did well in the half-court offensive sets.
"We got a lot of all-around contributions and got to play everybody in the first conference game."
Gaston College continues its 14-game Region 10 league slate at defending champion Brunswick Community College on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Rhinos' next home game is Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School against Caldwell Tech.
