Sixth straight victory keeps Gaston College basketball near top of Region 10 standings
Gaston College's basketball team claimed its sixth straight victory with an 81-76 win over Wake Tech on Thursday night at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School gymnasium.
The Rhinos, now 23-3 overall and 8-2 in Region 10, trailed by as many as six points in the first half before building as much as a 13-point lead and holding on for the win.
"We kept it interesting for sure," Gaston College coach Benny Moss said. "We've got to take better care of the basketball, box out and limit the opponents to one shot per possession and good things will happen."
The Rhinos trail only Brunswick Community College (21-3, 7-1) in the Region 10 with four league games remaining - at home on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Cape Fear Community College, at USC Salkehatchie Wednesday at 7, at home against Brunswick on March 1 at 2 p.m. and at Caldwell Tech on March 5 at 6 p.m.
"We've just got to go one day at a time," Moss said. "And that starts with getting better in practice. We've got to learn from this and then plan for Saturday. It'll be our fourth game in eight days so it's going to be a physical and mental challenge."
In Thursday's victory, Gaston College got its usual balance on a night in which two starters (E.J. Joyner and Ryan Evans) fouled out.
Tony Goodman (14 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists), Kaleb Siler (13 points, 13 rebounds, 5 blocks), Evans (11 points, 3 rebounds), Kush Carter (10 points, 4 rebounds), Joyner (10 points, 3 assists), Jozohn Price (8 points, 3 rebounds), Tin Tikvesa (6 points), J.R. Watson (5 points, 5 assists) and Spencer Breeden (4 points) led the Rhinos.
