Gaston College softball sets program history with first-ever doubleheader sweep
History continues to be made for the Gaston College softball program this month.
The first-year Rhinos' program recorded its first victory on March 7 and had its first win over a Region 10 Division II rival on March 18.
On Friday, Gaston College outdid itself with the school's first doubleheader sweep in 9-5 and 14-5 victories over Wake Tech in games played at Raleigh's Spring Forest Road Park.
"We're getting there," said Rhinos coach Mike Steuerwald, whose team improved to 4-12 overall with its third win in its last four games. "We competed really hard today. We came out and swung the bats well, fielded well and pitched well."
Serena Yelich had the program's first five-hit game in a 9-5 victory in the opener and finished with a team-high seven hits in the doubleheader.
Other standouts for the Rhinos in the sweep were Raynee Redington (two pitching wins, three hits), Emma Sattison (four hits, six RBIs, two home runs, two doubles), Emily Matthews (five hits, four RBIs, home run, double), Gracie Frazeur (three hits), Kayleigh Dockery (two hits), McKenzie Plaskin (two hits, home run) and McKenzie Gates (two hits).
Gaston College scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to snap a 5-all tie in the first game and the Rhinos erupted had five-run innings in the first and sixth innings in the nightcap that ended in six innings by the eight-run mercy rule.
"We had a lot of players that contributed today and it always feels better to win," Steuerwald said.
The Rhinos completed the two-game road trip with a 3 p.m. Saturday doubleheader at Pitt Community College.
