Gaston College closes out its inaugural softball season on Saturday

A 35-day layoff due to injuries was too much for Gaston College's first-year softball team to overcome as Florence-Darlington Tech swept the visiting Rhinos in a Saturday doubleheader that ended their inaugural season.

Under first-year coach Mike Steuerwald, first-year Gaston College went 4-16 overall and recorded two wins over Region 10 opponents.

In Saturday's final day, the Stingers won 15-0 in the opener and 13-0 in the nightcap as they collected 21 hits and took advantage of eight Gaston College errors that made 19 of Florence-Darlington Tech's 28 runs unearned.

It made for a challenging day for hard-luck pitcher Serena Yalich, who struck out three in her eight innings of work.

Kayleigh Dockery's one-out single in the fifth inning of the opener and walks drawn by Kaylyn Byrd (2), Yalich (1), McKenzie Plaskin (1), Kaylah Hannibal (1), Emily Matthews (1) and Morgan Maltba (1) led the Rhinos' offense.

"We appreciate our two sophomores, Emily Matthews and Kaylah Hannibal, for their work throughout the season," Steuerwald said of the two players who were playing their final games for Gaston College.
