2021-22 REVIEW: Top 10 moments of the year - No. 5 Softball's first victory couldn't have been more dramatic
It took Gaston College's inaugural softball team about three weeks to break into the win column for the first time, but the way the Rhinos reached that milestone sealed it as one of the top five moments of the year in GC sports.
In the first game of a doubleheader March 7 at Martha Rivers Park, Gaston College trailed Monroe College-Bronx Varsity Express 7-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
There was little reason to expect a rally at that point, but the Rhinos refused to give up on the game. Taking advantage of two Monroe College-Bronx errors, Gaston College put together a six-run scoring spree to pull out an 8-7 win.
After an infield error pulled the Rhinos within 7-5 and a bases-loaded walk trimmed the deficit to one run, the stage was set for the biggest at-bat of the season to that point.
With GC down to its last out, Raynee Redington hit an 0-2 pitch to deep right field for a walk-off double, scoring Kaylah Hannibal with the tying run and McKenzie Plaskin with the winning run.
The team went on to win three additional games over the course of the season, but nothing matched the drama and good vibes of that March afternoon at Martha Rivers.
