Gaston College extends winning streak with doubleheader sweep at Fayetteville Tech
Gaston College's softball team stayed with a doubleheader sweep at Fayetteville Tech on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Brantleigh Parrott starred at the plate and on the mound for the Rhinos in their 8-2 and 6-2 victories. It increased Gaston College's winning streak to eight games and improved their seasonal record to 12-2.
Parrott struck out 16 batters in seven innings of relief pitching and picked up the save for starter Tessa Hunt in the opener and got the win after relieving starter Amiya Tomlinson in the the nightcap. At the plate, Parrott was five for eight at the plate and had gotten 15 hits in her last 23 at-bats.
"She's been awesome for us on both sides of the ball," Steuerwald said of Parrott.
Other standouts for Gaston College were Serena Yalich, Logan Lilly and Asheton Queen.
Yalich had a RBI double and Lilly a two-out, two-run double in a three-run fifth inning in the opener to give the Rhinos the lead for good.
Yalich had two doubles in the opener and Lilly had six hits and five RBIs in the two games and Queen three hits, including a triple, in the two games.
"We did a lot of little things right for us to win the games," Steuerwald said. "Queen (shortstop) had some really big catches on defense. She made a leaping catch and doubled the runner off second. So what could've been a tie ballgame turned into us getting out of an inning."
Gaston College's defense made one error in the doubleheader - in the second game - and has made only 19 errors in 14 games this season.
The Rhinos return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Monroe College, N.Y., at Gastonia's CaroMont Health Park.
