No. 12 Gaston College sweeps Walters State to extend winning, double digit scoring streaks
No. 12-ranked Gaston College's softball team rolled to another doubleheader sweep on Tuesday with 11-7 and 21-14 at perennial power Walters State, Tenn.
The wins extended the Rhinos' winning streak to 12 games and extended the team's streak of scoring 10 or more runs to eight games.
"There's always things to be worked on," Gaston College coach Mike Steuerwald said. "We found a way to get some wins. Offensively we did a great job again. We've done a lot of really good things these last few games."
Savanna Price (6 hits, double, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs), Kendall Bradshaw (6 hits, 2 RBIs), Alayna Patrick (4 hits, double, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs), Grace Kealy (4 hits, 2 doubles, 1 RBI), Arissa Duff (4 hits, double, 1 RBI), Katelyn Brandon (3 hits, 2 home runs, 4 RBIs), Skye Harrington (3 hits, home run, 6 RBIs), Sarah Johnson (3 hits, double, 3 RBIs) and Mary Hinson (2 hits, double, 2 RBIs) led an offense that collected 35 hits in the doubleheader while scoring runs in 11 of 14 innings.
On the mound, Kristyn Ezzo threw a nine-hitter with seven strikeouts to get the win in the opener and reliever Savanna Mullins went 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts to the get the win in the nightcap.
Gaston College stays on the road for three more doubleheaders - Thursday at 1 p.m. at Louisburg, Sunday at 1 p.m. at USC Sumter and March 21 at 1 p.m. at USC Union. Louisburg is a perennial national power and ranked No. 8 in the most recent NJCAA Division II poll.
"We'll see how this group responds," Steuerwald said. "We've played a lot of games here in this stretch and a long road trip. Louisburg is a great team again so I'm excited to see how we'll do against them."
