No. 13 Gaston College sets record for single season wins while clinching 3rd straight Region 10 title
No. 13 Gaston College's softball team accomplished three extraordinary feats while extending their school-record winning streak to 18 games in Tuesday's 6-0 and 10-0 victories in a Region 10 Division I doubleheader sweep at USC Sumter.
The Rhinos improved to 51-3 on the season to break a school record for victories that was set by last year's 49-win team. Gaston College's victory improved its Region 10 Division I record to 18-0 and clinches the school's third straight regular season title. And the team's victory also gave the sophomore class 100 wins in their two seasons.
"It's really special to get 50 wins, a three-peat of conference titles and 100 wins in two seasons all in one day," Rhinos coach Mike Steuerwald said.
Gaston College turned 20 hits into 16 runs by using "small ball" to its advantage. Grace Kealy, Arissa Duff, Mary Hinson and Savanna Price had bunts that helped account for runs and Sarah Johnson also had an inside-the-park home run.
Skye Harrington (4 hits, 3 doubles, 3 RBIs), Alayna Patrick (3 hits, 1 RBI), Katelyn Brandon (3 hits, double, 3 RBIs), Kendall Bradshaw (2 hits, 1 RBI) and Hinson (2 hits, double, 1 RBI) led Gaston College's offense.
In the circle, Savanna Mullins and Abigail Brewton threw back-to-back two-hitters for Gaston College's 22nd and 23rd shutouts of the season.
"Mullins threw a good first game and Brew threw really well in the second game," Steuerwald said.
Gaston College remains on the road for the final three Region 10 Division I doubleheaders - Wednesday at 1 p.m. at USC Salkehatchie, Thursday at noon at USC Salkehatchie and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Florence Darlington Tech.
