No. 10 Gaston College records sweep in Winthrop Classic

No. 10 Gaston College's softball team continued an exhaustive stretch of games with a pair of victories on Friday over Georgia Military in the Winthrop Classic at Rock Hill, S.C.

Strong pitcher powered the Rhinos to 7-3 and 5-1 victories to improve their seasonal record to 11-1 after their eighth and ninth games of an eight-day stretch.

"It's been a long week for us," said Gaston College coach Michael Steuerwald, whose team closes the weekend on Saturday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Gordon State. "We're dragging a little bit. I told the team yesterday at practice that this was a good practice for what's it like in the World Series.
"We've just got find a way to bounce back with a lot of energy."

In Friday's opener, Savanna Mullins scattered eight hits in the opener that saw Katelyn Brandon slug a grand slam home run in a seven-run fourth inning rally and Jalyn Kopp pick up two hits including a double.

In the nightcap, Aidan Ledbetter pitched a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts and also helped herself at the plate with a two-run triple in the fifth inning.

"Mullins had probably her best outing of the year," Steuerwald said. "And Ledbetter threw really well in game two with 11 strikeouts and gave up six hits. She also hit a two-run triple so it was a pretty good day for her."
